How many times can you take the FE exam?

Under NCEES policy, once per testing window and no more than three times in any 12-month period. The testing windows are the calendar quarters. Your licensing board can be stricter.

Is there a lifetime limit?

Neither NCEES's FE exam page nor its Examinee Guide states one: the policy they publish limits how often you can sit, not how many times in total. Licensing boards set their own rules on top of NCEES's, and NCEES says some are more restrictive — so for you, the answer is your board's.

What three in twelve months looks like

Three FE attempts in consecutive testing windowsFive calendar quarters in a row. Attempts in the first three quarters are allowed. An attempt in the fourth quarter is not, because it would be a fourth attempt inside twelve months. An attempt in the fifth quarter is allowed once twelve months have passed since the first.

  2. Apr–JunAttempt
  3. Jul–SepAttempt
  4. Oct–DecNot allowed
  5. Jan–MarOnce 12 months have passed
Three attempts in consecutive windows is the most NCEES allows in a row. A fourth in the next window would make four inside twelve months, so it has to wait until twelve months have passed since the first.

What repeated attempts cost

Each registration pays the full NCEES fee — $225 for the FE — plus anything your board charges. Three attempts in a year is $675 in NCEES fees alone.

Use every attempt's report

Every attempt that does not pass comes with a diagnostic report, and NCEES puts the per-area scores on a 0–15 scale partly so they are consistent across exam forms and an examinee can compare results across attempts. Put two reports side by side: an area that moved is working; one that did not needs a different method, not more of the same.

Questions people ask

Can you take the FE exam twice in one quarter?

No. NCEES allows one attempt per testing window, and the windows are January–March, April–June, July–September and October–December.

How many times can you fail the FE?

NCEES's published policy does not cap the total. It caps the pace: one attempt per window, three per 12 months. Your board may set limits of its own.

Does failing several times count against you?

Not in the grading: NCEES grades first-time and repeat takers to the same standard. Whether a board treats repeated attempts differently is a question for that board.

What happens after three attempts in a year?

You wait until another attempt would not make four within any 12-month period — in practice, until twelve months after the first of the three.
