Cookie Policy
How we use cookies and similar technologies on our website
2026/09/20
Introduction
This Cookie Policy explains how we use cookies and similar technologies on our website, and names every one of them.
We do not run advertising on this site, we have no advertising partners, and nothing here builds a profile of your interests.
What Are Cookies
Cookies are small text files that are stored on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently and provide information to the website owners.
Two related technologies do much the same job and are covered by this policy: local storage and session storage, which also keep data in your browser. Session storage is cleared when you close the tab; local storage is not.
Cookies We Set Ourselves
These come from us rather than a third party. Neither is used for analytics.
| Name | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in session | Keeps you logged in and protects your account. Strictly necessary — the site cannot work without it. | When the session ends |
PARAGLIDE_LOCALE | Remembers whether you chose English or Chinese. | About 13 months |
afe_consent | Remembers your answer to the consent prompt, so you are not asked on every page. | 6 months |
Analytics Cookies and Storage
We use three analytics tools. Only two of them store anything on your device.
| Provider | What it stores | Expires |
|---|---|---|
| Plausible (self-hosted by us) | Nothing at all — it is cookieless by design. | — |
| Google Analytics 4 | _ga and _ga_HYMS0M3MZV, which tell one returning browser from another. | Up to 13 months |
| PostHog | A ph_phc_…_posthog cookie plus matching local and session storage entries, holding a randomly generated anonymous ID. | About a year |
The PostHog identifier is anonymous and is never linked to your account — we do not send PostHog your name, email address or user ID.
PostHog also provides two features that go beyond counting: heatmaps, which record where clicks land on a page, and session recording, which replays a random 10% sample of visits. Form field contents are masked and are not captured in a replay.
Your Choice
If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, the analytics cookies and storage above are not set unless you accept them. You are asked on your first visit, recording and heatmaps are a separate opt-in from ordinary analytics, and refusing takes one click. Elsewhere they are set by default.
Cookie settings in the site footer reopens that prompt wherever you are, so you can change or withdraw your answer at any time. Withdrawing deletes the analytics cookies and storage already on your device.
Plausible is unaffected by this choice, because it stores nothing to consent to.
Managing Cookies
Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can:
- Delete cookies from your device
- Block cookies by activating the setting on your browser that allows you to refuse all or some cookies
- Set your browser to notify you when you receive a cookie
A tracker-blocking extension will also stop the analytics above from loading. Only the sign-in cookie is required for the site to function; blocking it will stop you logging in, but the practice material will still work.
Please note that if you choose to block or delete cookies, you may not be able to access certain areas or features of our website.
Changes to This Cookie Policy
We may update our Cookie Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Cookie Policy on this page.
