Worked: a T-section
A 2 in × 8 in web stands under a 6 in × 2 in flange, so the section is 10 in deep. Measured from the bottom: flange area 12 in² at y = 9 in, web area 16 in² at y = 4 in.
| Part | A (in²) | I_c (in⁴) | d (in) | A·d² (in⁴) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flange | 12 | 4.0 | 2.86 | 98.0 |
| Web | 16 | 85.3 | 2.14 | 73.5 |
ȳ = (12 × 9 + 16 × 4)/28 = 6.14 in from the bottom. I = 4.0 + 98.0 + 85.3 + 73.5 ≈ 261 in⁴ about the centroidal axis.
