Course Introduction
4 min read
The NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering exam is a computer-based test that runs 6 hours end to end, of which 5 hours and 20 minutes is actual working time. This guide walks the full topic outline in the order that builds best, rather than the order NCEES happens to print it.
You get one reference during the exam: the NCEES FE Reference Handbook. The units here name the relations the exam leans on in the form the handbook prints them, because finding an equation quickly is a scored skill in its own right. Keep your own copy open while you read.
How the guide is organised
Chapters follow the FE Civil specification. Each chapter breaks into sections, one per knowledge area, and each section into units of roughly one sitting. Every unit ends with a quiz drawn from its own knowledge area, and each area gets units roughly in proportion to the questions it supplies, so the civil chapter is the longest.
| Chapter | Knowledge areas | Questions on the paper | Units |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Mathematics & Statistics | Mathematics and statistics | 8–12 | 9 |
| 2. Engineering Sciences | Statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials | 19–29 | 15 |
| 3. Fluids & Materials | Fluid mechanics, materials | 11–17 | 8 |
| 4. Civil Engineering Practice | Surveying, water resources, structural, geotechnical, transportation, construction | 53–80 | 39 |
| 5. Professional Practice | Ethics, engineering economics | 9–14 | 8 |
