Torsion of Round Shafts

5 min read

Worked: a drive shaft

A solid round shaft 2 in in diameter and 4 ft long, fixed at the left end, with a torque applied at the right end that transmits 50 hp at 300 rpm.

T = 63,025 × 50/300 = 10,500 in-lb. J = π × 2⁴/32 = 1.571 in⁴, and r = 1 in, so τ = 10,500 × 1/1.571 = 6,690 psi at the surface.

With G = 11.5 × 10⁶ psi over 48 in: φ = 10,500 × 48/(11.5 × 10⁶ × 1.571) = 0.0279 rad = 1.60°.
