Construction Engineering
Total Float
How long an activity can be delayed without delaying the project, LS − ES.
Total float is found from the forward and backward passes of the critical path method as late start minus early start, or late finish minus early finish. Activities with zero total float form the critical path. Float belongs to the path, not the activity, so using it on one activity consumes it for the others in the chain.
Free float is the narrower measure: the delay an activity can absorb without delaying the early start of any successor. Resource leveling works by moving non-critical activities within their float.
